School: The National College for Educational Leadership (NCEL)

The National College for Educational Leadership (NCEL) as an agency of the modernized Ministry of Education was established in 2011 under the Education System Transformation Programme (ESTP), with the mandate to develop excellent leadership in Jamaica’s education system. It provides strategic initiatives to improve leadership and facilitate the provision of support and create local networks. The College serves the development needs of school leaders from aspiring to experienced principals, middle managers and from bursars to board chairmen.

Prior to the introduction of NCEL, many of the training programmes for principals were largely theoretical. While a strong theoretical underpinning is vital, there was the need to vary the modalities of training, to shift the balance from the acquisition of knowledge to individual development and growth and the improvement of skills and competences.

NCEL’s programmes which are all competency based are delivered by experienced facilitators within their given fields. The College offers training programmes for every education leadership professional.
